The role of the Data Protection Officer (DPO) is evolving, and with the privacy landscape shifting and being redefined to take into account new challenges, it is imperative that companies start thinking critically about the structure, leadership and responsibilities of their data protection teams.

In particular, organisations must take note of the requirements that could be introduced under a revised Data Protection Directive. There has been much discussion on increasing organisations’ responsibilities, through requiring them to appoint a DPO, conduct privacy assessments, and implement internal audit mechanisms, among others.

The accountability principle may also feature in the revised Directive, which would require data controllers to take appropriate and effective measures to implement privacy principles, and demonstrate compliance upon request.
